Drug payment scheme
This entitles all eligible families to receive prescriptions for no more than €120.00  per month. A family consists of all dependents and full time students up to age of 23 years.

General Medical Schemes
Families and individuals who qualify receive approved medicines free of charge.

Long Term Illness Scheme
A certain number of illnesses are classified as long term and those who qualify receive all medicines free of charge eg Diabetes.

EU scheme
Members of other EU states are entitled to free prescription medicines on receipt of a Irish doctor's prescription in Ireland. Certain restrictions apply.

Government schemes
Health Amendment Act qualifies all victims of Hepatitis C to full medicine cover free of charge.

High Tech Scheme
Some specialised medicines which formally were provided by the health centres are now provided from pharmacies on receipt of a hospital consultant's prescription either under the DPS or GMS scheme.

Exemptions from the General Medicine Service Scheme
Products not freely available under the above scheme can sometimes be provided free of charge on special application to the Health Board.
